Primary 5
Our Australian Pen Pals
There was great excitement in P5 after Easter when we received letters from our pen pals in Australia. Bailey, my nephew, visited Ireland for the second time and brought with him letters from his Year 3 class in Brisbane.
Their topic in school was ‘Celebrations’ so they shared events in their lives that they celebrate, particularly those relating to their Australian culture such as ANZAC Day. P5 responded by writing letters to each child in Bailey’s class, telling them about our celebrations in Ireland such as St Patrick’s Day and St Brigid’s day. We also shared hobbies we enjoy such as Gaelic, Camogie and hurling, and explained how they are played.
Bailey visited our school for a day before he went back to Australia on Thursday and we gave him our letters. He told us about his family, school, hobbies and favourite food. P5 then shared similar information and experiences with Bailey. It was a great day to learn about another country and culture. We look forward to hearing that our letters reached our Australian pen pals and what they thought of them.
